چکیده

We exploit the close relationship between circular arc graphs and interval graphs to design efficient approximation algorithms for NP-hard Optimization problems on circular arc graphs. The problems considered here are maximum domatic partition and on-line minimum vertex coloring. We present a heuristic for the domatic partition problem with a performance ratio of 4. For on-line coloring, we consider two different on-line models. In the first model, arcs are presented in the increasing order of their left endpoints. For this model, our heuristic guarantees a solution which is within a factor of 2 of the optimal (off-line) value; and we show that no on-line coloring algorithm can achieve a performance guarantee of less than 3/2. In the second online model, arcs are presented in an arbitrary order; and it is known that no on-lane coloring algorithm can achieve a performance guarantee of less than 3. For this model, we present a heuristic which provides a performance guarantee of 4.

Approximating the independent domatic partition problem in random geometric graphs - an experimental study

We investigate experimentally the Domatic Partition (DP) problem, the Independent Domatic Partition (IDP) problem and the Idomatic partition problem in Random Geometric Graphs (RGGs). In particular, we model these problems as Integer Linear Programs (ILPs), solve them optimally, and show on a large set of samples that RGGs are independent domatically full most likely (over 93% of the cases) and...

New results on upper domatic number of graphs

For a graph $G = (V, E)$, a partition $pi = {V_1,$ $V_2,$ $ldots,$ $V_k}$ of the vertex set $V$ is an textit{upper domatic partition} if $V_i$ dominates $V_j$ or $V_j$ dominates $V_i$ or both for every $V_i, V_j in pi$, whenever $i neq j$. The textit{upper domatic number} $D(G)$ is the maximum order of an upper domatic partition. We study the properties of upper domatic number and propose an up...

Polynomial time recognition of unit circular-arc graphs

We present an efficient algorithm for recognizing unit circular-arc (UCA) graphs, based on a characterization theorem for UCA graphs proved by Tucker in the seventies. Given a proper circular-arc (PCA) graph G, the algorithm starts from a PCA model for G, removes all its circle-covering pairs of arcs and determines whether G is a UCA graph. We also give an O(N) time bound for Tucker’s 3/2-appro...

Approximation Algorithms for Domatic Partitions∗

We prove a new structural property regarding the “skyline” of uniform radius disks and use this to derive a number of new sequential and distributed approximation algorithms for well-known optimization problems on unit disk graphs (UDGs). Specifically, the paper presents new approximation algorithms for two problems: domatic partition and weighted minimum dominating set (WMDS) on UDGs, both of ...

The upper domatic number of powers of graphs

Let $A$ and $B$ be two disjoint subsets of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$. The set $A$ is said to dominate $B$, denoted by $A rightarrow B$, if for every vertex $u in B$ there exists a vertex $v in A$ such that $uv in E(G)$. For any graph $G$, a partition $pi = {V_1,$ $V_2,$ $ldots,$ $V_p}$ of the vertex set $V$ is an textit{upper domatic partition} if $V_i rightarrow V_j$ or $V_j rightarrow...
